Ib exam - How to Pass Exams and Achieve Exam Success

Are you confident that you can pass exams? Do you believe you have the potential to be a great exam taker? After marking thousands of exams papers and sitting through more than I can remember, I realized that very few people are able to pass exams and be successful in exam success. I have seen many students make the same mistakes as me, and even invent some that I didn't know about!

You can avoid making mistakes if you are aware of them and plan accordingly.

Sometimes it seems like people are expected to know how to approach revising and exam techniques. Although they are taught the subjects of mathematics, English and history, science, or any other subject, they do not know how to revise or how to prepare for exams. Many students receive very few exam tips and guidelines to help them succeed in exams. You can work hard, but that doesn't mean you won't succeed. Do you want to work hard at what?

Yet, exams have a huge impact on our lives and are given so much importance! Exams are a part of our daily lives at school, college and university. You can find exams at work and in your hobbies. Success on exams can be like a magical potion to get into college or university. It may also help you land a job or promotion.

It is absurd to think that exams, as important as they are, should be left up to chance. Don't leave your future up to chance. Learn what you can do.

As an experienced teacher, author and examiner, I can help you learn how to succeed in exams. I have been through many exams, both at school and university, as well as through Open University and other distance learning programs. Both my last two results were distinctions. However, I didn't know how to approach or revise my exams at school.

These exam tips will help you to think about what they might be like. If you are unsure how it compares with your current or future plans, take a look at these resources for more information on revision and exam technique.

Before the exam:

  • Do not delay in telling your teacher if you are having trouble with your studies.
  • Find out the format of your exams.
  • Get past and/or sample papers for exams as soon as you can.
  • Learn how to use the tools that you will use in your exam.
  • Consider special needs if you need it.

You will learn these things throughout your course:

  • Get started on your revisions as soon as you can. Read around your subject. Regularly revise and test your knowledge. A revision schedule is a good idea.
  • You can revisit subjects that you aren't as interested in as others.
  • Revise in a conducive environment for study.
  • Revision summaries can be used to assist you in answering exam questions.
  • You can practice answering questions with or without your notes from time to time.
  • Learn by being active. You can use whatever memory tricks work best for you.
  • Many sessions, rather than a few long ones, are better than a lot of them! Research has shown that a session should last between 40 and 45 minutes. After this, you should take a break to rest before continuing with the next session.
